Crackdown on companies promoting pyramid schemes
MALACCA: The Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Ministry will mobilise plainclothes enforcement officers in a crackdown on direct selling companies promoting pyramid schemes.
Its deputy minister, Datuk Tan Lian Hoe said action would be taken against companies involved in pyramid schemes under the Direct Sales Act 1993 and the Anti-Pyramid Act approved recently.
"The Direct Selling Act 1993 (amendment) imposes stiffer penalties on individual or companies involved in pyramid schemes," she told reporters after opening the Empowering Consumers Seminar at Seri Negeri, Ayer Keroh, here Friday.
She said under the act, companies found guilty of promoting pyramid schemes could be fined up to RM50mil and had their licence withdrawn.
Individuals could be fined up to RM5mil, jailed up to five years or both for the first offence, and fined up to RM10mil and jailed up to 10 years for the second offence, she added. - Bernama
